WE’RE ASKING FOR DONATIONS, BUT IT DOESN’T HAVE TO COST YOU A CENT
Good day,
My name is Sumanda Maritz and I’m writing to you on behalf of Laerskool Vissershoek. This little farm school on the Gauteng/North West border is starting a Media Centre at the school. Our first step is to start with a library section and this is where we want to ask for your assistance. Although there are many things that I would love to ask for, there are only two items that we desperately need. We need books for the library and we need bookcases, there are also a few small items that we’ll need urgently.
Background on Laerskool Vissershoek
Laerskool Vissershoek was started in 1891 as a farm school in the De Wildt area. The school faced closing in 2005 due to a lack of students, but with a big effort the school has just over 200 learners today. Although there used to be a library at the school, the library had to be closed many years ago so that it could be used as a classroom. With new classrooms supplied by the Department of Education, Laerskool Vissershoek can finally establish a Media Centre. Because the school has limited resources due to it’s size and the strained pockets of the parents, we are forced to look elsewhere for assistance with this project.
Our Aim for the Media Centre
Setting up the library is the first step of our plan towards building a fully functional Media Centre. What we would like to accomplish in full entails the library, a media centre where the kids will be able to watch educational movies, a computer section where children will be able to learn how to use a computer, do research for their assignments and help build a Wikipedia for the school.
How can you help us?
First, if you could ask your staff to donate any old books they have lying around at home. We would really appreciate it. It can be any book, no matter the language, content or age. With books that are unsuitable for the children we will either setup an adult section for the use of the parents at a yearly fee or we will exchange these books at a second hand book store for books that will be suitable for the kids.
If you would like to donate new children’s books, we would really appreciate some of the newer Afrikaans children’s series that have hit the market, for instance the “Frits Deelman” series and the Babalela books. The old classics will also be appreciated like “Die Swart Kat”, “Saartjie”, “Maasdorp”, “Trompie”, etc.
Secondly if your office has any redundant bookcases, shelving or other office furniture that you could donate towards the school we would greatly appreciate it.
The smaller items that are urgently needed include paint, stationery items like paper, plastic book covers and cellotape and one big item in the form of a lockable stationery cupboard.
Other items we would be glad to accept
As you all know every library has some general items that we would always be able to use. The following is a list of items that we either don’t have at the moment or that will be used on a regular basis. Since we are starting this project from scratch this has turned into a very long list.
- A laser printer / copier – for the students to use when doing research for school projects
- Paper – even scrap paper can be of use
- Stationery – items like plastic wrap, glue, sticky tape, cd’s, memory sticks, labels. If you can imagine it being used in a library or media centre, we can use it.
- Computers – for security reasons we would prefer laptops or notebooks that will be easier to lock away at night.
- Computer screens, mice and other items like cabling, connectors, mousepads, cd/dvd writer, external harddrive for the ebooks, etc
- TV or screen to watch documentaries on
- Music centre for story time or sing-a-longs
- Even something as silly as a carpet and small cushions for the kids to sit on will be appreciated.
- Posters that would be appropriate for a school library.
- Afrikaans children books.
Financial assistance
I’m sure you will agree that any school or organisation would benefit from financial assistance. The library is my pet project because of the fun times I spent in the school library when I was a kid. I believe that all children should have the same opportunity. I will be setting up and running the library. The school is unable to pay me a salary and I will be doing this without payment. However, if we could get a sponsor to enable the school to pay me a minimal salary, it would take a big load of my shoulders.
What we have achieved so far
We have collected a lot of second hand books that need to be catalogued and sorted according to use. We also have a lead on reference books that will be followed up as soon as the cataloguing has been completed on what we’ve received. We are planning a book sale at the school in the new year to generate funds for the library.

My naam is Sumanda Maritz en ek skryf vandag aan u namens Laerskool Vissershoek. Hierdie klein plaas skooltjie op die grens van Gauteng en die Noord Wes gaan ‘n Media Sentrum begin by die skool. Die eerste stap is om ‘n biblioteek te stig en dit is hier waar ons u hulp nodig het. Alhoewel daar baie goed is wat ek graag voor wil vra is daar slegs twee goed wat ons desperaat nodig het. Ons kort boeke en boekrakke vir die biblioteek, sowel as ‘n paar kleiner items.
Agtergrond oor Laerskool Vissershoek
Laerskool Vissershoek het begin 1891 as ‘n plaasskool op die plaas Vissershoek in die De Wildt omgewing. As gevolg van ‘n tekort aan leerlinge het die skool amper toe gemaak in 2005, maar met ‘n groot poging het die skool vandag meer as 200 leerlinge. Daar was vantevore ‘n biblioteek by die skool, maar lank terug is die biblioteek van kant gemaak omdat daar ‘n te kort aan klaskamers was. Die Departement van Onderwys het nou twee nuwe klaskamers verskaf en die skool wil bitter graag weer ‘n media sentrum begin. Die skool se hulpbronne is klein weens die grote van die skool en die swak ekonomiese toestande wat ons nou forseer om op ander plekke vir hulp te soek met hierdie projek.
Ons mikpunt vir die Media Sentrum
Die biblioteek is die eerste stap na die ontwikkeling van ‘n volledige Media Sentrum. Wat ons graag wil bereik is ‘n volwaardige biblioteek vir die kinders, so wel as ‘n media sentrum waar die kinders opvoedkundige programme kan kyk, ‘n rekenaar afdeling waar die kinders rekenaargeletterdheid kan leer en navorsing vir take kan doen. Ons wil ook graag ‘n Wikipedia vir die skool opbou wat huidige en toekomstige leerders kan help.
Hoe kan u ons help?
Eerstens wil ons graag vra dat u en u werknemers enige ou boeke wat by die huis rondlê vir ons te skenk. Dit kan werklik enige boek wees. Die boeke wat ons nie vir die kinders gebruik nie kan ons of vir die ouers ‘n afdeling maak waarvoor hulle jaarlikse lidmaatgelde betaal of ons kan dit by ‘n tweedehandse boekwinkels gaan ruil vir boeke wat ons wel kan gebruik.
Indien u nuwe boeke wil skenk vir die kinders sal ons regtig van die nuwer Afrikaanse reekse waardeer byvoorbeeld die “Frits Deelman” reeks of die “Babalela” boeke. Die ouer Afrikaanse boeke sal ook baie welkom wees soos byvoorbeeld “Die Swart Kat”, “Saartjie”, “Maasdorp”, “Trompie”, ens.
Tweedens indien u kantoor enige boekrakke, rakke of ander kantoor meublement het wat u kan skenk sal ons dit vreeslik waardeer.
Die kleiner items wat ons dringend benodig sluit in verf, skryfbehoeftes soos papier, plastiek boekoortreksels en cellotape. Daar is ook ‘n enkele groot item wat ons benodig, ‘n sluitbare skryfbehoefte kas.
Ander items wat ons met graagte sal ontvang
Soos u weet is daar sekere items wat enige biblioteek of media sentrum sal kan gebruik. Die volgende lys is items wat ons nie huidiglik het nie of wat ons op ‘n gereelde basis sal gebruik. Aangesien ons hierdie projek met niks begin is dit ongelukkig ‘n lang lys.
- ‘n Printer / kopieerder – vir die leerlinge om te gebruik wanneer hulle navorsing doen vir take.
- Papier – selfs gebruikte papier sal ons kan help
- Skryfbehoeftes – enige items soos plastiek vir boeke oortrek, gom, sellotape, cd’s, data stokkies, ens. Indien jy dit in ‘n biblioteek of media sentrum kan indink, kan ons dit gebruik.
- Rekenaars – vir veiligheidsredes sal ons laptops of notebooks verkies wat makliker weggesluit kan word wanneer die media sentrum nie oop is nie.
- Rekenaar skerms, muise, kabels, cd/dvd skrywer, eksterne hardeskyf vir eboeke, ens
- TV of skerm om dokumentêre stories te kan kyk
- Musiek speler vir storie tyd of saam sing
- Selfs iets so eienaardigs soos ‘n mat en kussings vir die kinders om op te sit sal waardeer word.
- Afrikaanse kinderboeke
- Muur prente geskik vir ‘n skool biblioteek
Finansiële bystand
U sal sekerlik saamstem dat enige skool of organisasie kan doen met finansiële bystand. Die media sentrum is my projek aangesien ek soveel heerlike ure in skool biblioteke kon geniet as ‘n kind. Ek glo dat elke kind dieselfde geleentheid behoort te hê. Ek gaan dus die media sentrum opstel en ook behartig. Die skool kan my ongelukkig nie ‘n salaris betaal nie. Hulle het net nie die fondse om dit te kan doen nie. Dus gaan ek die werk doen sonder betaling. Wat egter ‘n baie groot hulp vir my persoonlik sal wees, is indien iemand ‘n finansiële borgskap aan die skool kan bied wat hulle in staat sal stel om my ‘n minimale salaris te kan betaal. Ek sal egter die werk doen selfs al kan daar nie ‘n salaris betaal word nie.
Wat het ons tot dusvêr bereik
Ons het tot dusvêr ‘n klomp tweedehandse boeke bymekaar gemaak. Hierdie boeke moet nou gesorteer word en ‘n gekatalogiseer word. Daar is ook ‘n plek waar ons navorsingsboeke kan gaan afhaal, wat ons sal doen sodra al die boeke wat ons reeds ontvang het gekatalogiseer is. Ons beplan ook ‘n boekverkoping by die skool in volgende jaar.
So ver het ons nog geen boekrakke of rakke vir die biblioteek nie.
Hoe om ‘n skenking te maak
Epos asseblief die skool of los ‘n boodskap op hierdie bladsy. U kan die items by die skool aflewer of as u dit nie kan aflewer nie, kontak ons asseblief sodat ons kan reel om dit af te haal. Indien u op hoogte gehou wil word oor die vordering van die media sentrum volg ons gerus op Facebook.
