Actually Margate in SA is quite a nice holiday spot. Great beach, lovely tidal pool, nice splash pool next to the beach for the little ones, an informal market stretching down the coastal road and the famous waffles at the Wimpy right on the main beach. However NOT during the Christmas and Easter holiday’s. Then it’s a certifiable mad house.

Sumanda, I just read about MARGATE. I laughed my head off. We have a Margate in the UK and it is on the coast with a beach. Most of the year it is the most uninteresting place you could possibly go to. From now on I’m going to avoid all places with that name.

Hello, Sumanda! Brava for writing this! I don’t know much about it yet, as I’ve only read this introduction and portions of Chapter One. I must be honest and tell you, because of my personal experiences, this is a difficult topic to read. I keep crying over what it makes me remember. It’s not a topic I want to read, but for several reasons I think I should read it. You asked for opinions, and I want to give you mine. I haven’t critiqued a lot of work in non fiction, so I hope I can offer some valuable advice. Because I do have my experience, I count myself as part of the intended audience for this book, and I don’t mind being a guinea pig of sorts for you to discover, will this story help someone else deal with their own grief? I hope so.

Thanks again for sharing it.

Sumanda, I really like the straight-forward “you” voice of this piece. Along the lines Ray has suggested, I would think you might want to expand on the emotions, physical limitations, etc. But perhaps not. There are some awkward sentences – “what I think was the night of conception was after a birthday party” – perhaps try “I think the night of conception followed a birthday party” or something similar. I search for that kind of thing by reading what I read out loud to myself. Also watch out for what the reader may or may not understand. For example I have no clue what you mean by “POAS’ed” – even though I know what’s going on.

I’ll keep reading!
